    JEWELS ON THE BEACH

    CTliveBy CTlive24/07/2025

The beach is a frontier environment between two universes: the submerged marine and the terrestrial. As such, the beach receives all the materials, organic and inorganic, that the sea returns to the shore. The coastal sea currents and the wave motion breaking on the shoreline in fact beach materials washed out to sea by the rivers, but also marine organisms. Among these, the shells of molluscs stand out for the surprising perfection of their shapes and chromatic decorations.

On the beaches of Cavallino, the presence of shells is rich and interesting. In addition to the species typical of the sandy seabed, there are also gastropod molluscs that live in the “tegnue” and therefore on the submerged reefs of fossil sand. Thus, alongside the Rough cockle (Acanthocardia ruberculata) and the Rosy razor clam (Solecurtus strigilatus), one can find large Scallop shells (Pecten jacobeus), Murex (Bolinus brandaris) and numerous other species. These are considered proper jewels created by the marine ecosystem, that later gifts them to the beach visitors.
