The excavations of Lio Piccolo becomes an archaeological museum

    CTliveBy CTlive19/06/2024

Participatory culture and cultural tourism at the cen ter of the “Living on Water” project and of the recent archaeological investigations of the Villa Marittima of Lio Piccolo conducted by the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice together with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape. After over three months of work and research by the scientific team of Ca’ Foscari, until the end of June it will be possible to visit (by reservation only) the site at the facilities of the Villa Marittima of Lio Piccolo, which represents the largest archaeological excavation stratigraphic study from the Roman era never conducted within the Venice lagoon.

    THE RESEARCH

Thanks to the shape of the lagoon embankment, the site has been preserved in a unique way and has allowed the team of scientific directors Diego Calaon and Daniela Cottica to explore the deep structures of the imperial era, located three meters below the walking level, of a ancient “company” for the production of salt and fish farming. The structure, which overlooked a wide canal, connected the port of the ancient city of Altino with the sea and its harbor mouth. Identified nearly 25 years ago by Ernesto Canal, over the past three years the structure has been excavated from the ground, revealing a series of complex buildings with a chronology ranging from the 1st to the 6th century AD, which have undergone various transformations over time.
