In the heart of Lio Piccolo, the exhibition “Frammenti di Laguna” (Fragments of the Lagoon) traces the long history of the lagoon territories from Roman times to the modern era. Housed in the village’s former nursery school, it brings together artefacts, testimonies and reconstructions that offer a vivid insight into daily life, trade and environmental changes. The exhibition highlights the link with Altino, an ancient centre of importance, and demonstrates how even small communities are custodians of a precious historical heritage. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 12pm and 3pm to 5.30pm. Free admission.
The research
Lio Piccolo is home to the first known example of a Roman villa in the northern lagoon, overlooking the ancient coastline of Altino. Known since the 1980s thanks to Ernesto Canal, a new survey was carried out in 2024, whilst a new research campaign, including underwater work, began in 2010 under the auspices of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.
