The European capital of open-air tourism, Cavallino- Treporti is also an open-air museum. In fact, there is a real open-air museum here, called, not by chance, the “Via dei Forti” (Forts Route), which consists of a themed itinerary linking the military fortifications built between 1845 and 1917. There are two hundreds telemetric towers, batteries, bunkers, forts and shelters built facing the sea, which formed the ancient defence system of Venice and the coastline, and represent a historical and cultural heritage of considerable value, in fact an open-air museum.
The historical itinerary of the Great War revolves around the Pisani Battery, which has been restored and turned into a museum with five exhibitions of historical military interest and a venue for various events. Then there are the Amalfi Batteries, which can be seen from the outside, and the Radaelli and San Marco Batteries in the Villaggio San Paolo and Mediterraneo campsites.
