The ‘Downward Dog’ is perhaps one of the best-known yoga postures, easily incorporated into any style of yoga whether it is a beginner or advanced practice. In more dynamic yoga strands, the ‘Upside Down Dog’ is used as a neutralising and relaxing pose. This is why it is recommended, for example, for athletes after running. It helps to keep the muscles at the back of the thigh, which often shorten with regular running, flexible.
This position energises and restores strength after physical or mental exertion. The spinal column is lengthened in an unloaded state, thus reducing pressure on the discs between the spinal vertebrae. The arm muscles are strengthened, the back muscles also work.
The ‘Downward Dog’ also has many beneficial effects on a spiritual level.
